About me

¡Hola!

¡Hola!— I’m Val Ponce Najera (they/them), an LGBTIQ2S+ inclusive language translator, interpreter and educator based in Denver, Colorado!

I am deeply passionate about advancing the rights and acceptance of LGBTIQ2S+ and Latinx communities through the power of inclusive language and culturally responsive information.

Originally from Chihuahua, México, my passion for social justice and education was born out of a need to advocate for my own inclusion in a conservative town. Growing up, there were not a lot of spaces for me to safely express myself and my identity. This is why I started researching and building knowledge about LGBTIQ2S communities and inclusion.

In law school, I joined the LGBTIQ2S student group and started sharing this knowledge by providing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion workshops for the teachers and school leadership. Through this experience, I fell in love with finding meaningful ways to support people in their journey towards acceptance of LGBTIQ2S people.

As for inclusive language, I struggled with the fact that many people from my community were rejecting the new trends of inclusive language with the excuse that they were “not grammatically correct.” And so, I decided to find a way to neutralize language using the already existing rules of grammar. Turns out that Spanish, while highly gendered, is also highly versatile! Which means that there is always a gender neutral way to phrase things.
